From the outside looking in, I had it all—a career I loved, a supportive family, the Nixon metabolism but not the Nixon ears, and a salary that supported my lavish taste in designer shoes, fine wine, and lacy lingerie … but I had no one to share it with.
Until the day I ran into him—my one night stand from college with the crooked smile, let’s-get-out-of-here eyes, and dirty, dirty mouth.
Cute and cocky then, today Levi Brooks is six feet four inches of hot bearded fantasy. A sexy single dad with broad shoulders, strong hands, and a fantastically big … heart. (I mean, it’s massive. And generous. And it pumps so hard … um. Sorry. Lost my place.)
Being a good father means everything to him, but he’s keeping me at a distance because he thinks I deserve someone better — a man who can give me more time, more attention, more of himself. He doesn’t believe he could ever be enough.
But he’s wrong.

I have read more than my fair share of romance stories but this one takes the cake and had pulled on my heartstrings in the unlikely of places. The story will have you feeling more than your typical boy meets girl, one night stand, and finding each other again years later type of story. Two souls who had plenty for themselves but no companionship to share it with due to their hesitation to commitment thanks to their vulnerabilities from their past.
In this book we have the oldest Nixon sister, Jillian. She has a career, a supportive family with sisters as her best friends, and a lifestyle of spending things on her lavish taste that any women would love. Nonetheless, there is one thing missing, a man to share her life with. Someone to be with emotionally and physically and creating a forever type life. Falling and being in love that surrounds her daily is something that she seeks.
Then comes in sexy, bearded, single dad, Levi Brooks who has an 8 years old son who is his everything. When we get to know Levi and his world you cannot help but fall deep and hard for the relationship that he has with his son. The things that he had built and does for him is beyond
special and it had me feeling so much more when it came to his POV.
“We come to love not by finding a perfect person, but by learning to see an imperfect person
perfectly,” he quoted.
When Jillian and Levi reconnect at an event, the want for more is visibly present; however, chances for more get constantly interrupted. That alone causes them to be afraid to get close and being hurt once again and which in turns entails limitations on their dating relationship. The push and pull through the read is present not just with each other but with the people who they hold dear too. This read was not just another story of reconnection with someone, nor was it all about the physical needs, but rather a relationship being created on what life has thrown at them. Is it worth the risk? You have to pick up a copy to find out. I utterly enjoyed this book and have a feeling you will too.

Some Sort of Love will most definitely tug at your heartstrings. I couldn’t stop reading, going deeper and getting sucked into the story of Levi Brooks and the oldest Nixon sister, Jillian. Both their vulnerable side and insecurities about love and commitment just enthralled me and captured my heart. They may have met and mingled more than a decade ago, but who would’ve thought after that closet room fiasco that they’d develop something more—something much more meaningful and beautiful?
Jillian Nixon is the oldest of the Nixon sisters, and so far, she’s the only one lonely and still very much single. It may have not bothered her all too much before, but seeing her younger sisters happily in love and each starting families of their own made her feel more alone and miserable than ever. Being a doctor, her crazy work schedule only permitted her so much time for herself and her family. It doesn’t help matters either that she’s already in her early thirties, that she could feel the pressure from her relatives of being the only single sister left in her family much stronger than ever before. And she was getting tired of it. Her time was running out and she was starting to lose hope that she’ll never end up finding her one true love or her happily ever after.
Levi Brooks is a single daddy to an eight year old son and I must say, their relationship is beyond special. I think this is what I love most about him—about them both. Levi’s love and passion for his son was so strong that I could feel it in my bones every single time Scotty, his son, was brought up in the book. You would see how much he cared for him and put him first at all times, making him the center of his world. It was so heart-melting (and panty-dropping). This man’s courage and vehemence to take care and bring up a son all on his own was what made him so much more appealing to my eyes and my heart. It may have been driven by something else before, but you couldn’t blame him. He was so young when he had Scotty. And yet, he still did everything he could to do right by his son. It was definitely one of my weaknesses to witness something like this, especially with Levi and Scotty’s situation.
I thoroughly loved how this book—actually this entire series—revolved around and focused so much on family. How it kept the importance and highlighted the meaning of close family ties. It was presented on so many levels and different ways that after reading this, you’d come to realize how big of a role it really plays on a person’s development and growth in personality and life. You’d see how just a little alteration on being brought up could cause a huge impact on that person, no matter if it was that person’s childhood or that person entering into parenthood. How it would take a leap of faith to break that, learn from it, move forward and just do your best to make everything better. I also loved so much how Levi found Jillian as his respite through it all. There may have been times I wanted to sucker punch his gorgeous face from holding back and pulling away, causing Jillian so much hurt, but I couldn’t blame him. At all.
Melanie Harlow has most definitely won my heart on this series. She made it swell, filled to the brim with so much love, yet shattered it from life and guilt getting in the way. Levi and Scotty Brooks will always live in my heart. Like I said, the bond of this father and son is imprinted on my heart forever. Needless to say, this truly won’t be the last book I’ll be reading from this author. ~
Melanie Harlow likes her martinis dry, her heels high, and her history with the naughty bits left in. When she’s not writing or reading, she gets her kicks from TV series like VEEP, Game of Thrones, House of Cards, and Homeland. She occasionally runs three miles, but only so she can have more gin and steak.
Melanie is the author of the HAPPY CRAZY LOVE series, the FRENCHED series, and the sexy historical SPEAK EASY duet, set in the 1920s. She lifts her glass to romance readers and writers from her home near Detroit, MI, where she lives with her husband, two daughters, and pet rabbit.
